Not seeing Alfa 156 Selespeed (2001 model)

Up to date MD802 (14/4/2015) unable to communicate with this vehicle even though a proper Alfa comms unit is working on the same car's OBD port.
Can somebody look into this urgently please - I need to fault-find a funky Selespeed box and the poor owner is stranded till my expensive scanner can start speaking Alfa -
